You may remember that I had inherited a ventilation problem as it pertained to our roof when we purchased our cottage. We installed a “cold roof” (ventilated air space between two roof decks) at your recommendation. This installation with the Styrofoam inserts under the shingles has benefited us a great deal on hot days because our cottage stays at least 10 degrees cooler than outside all day even though most of the roof is exposed to direct sunlight at different times of the day.

Trees, shade, a lake (or no lake), and shingle roofs do not mix well because of lichen (fungus), and ours was no exception. What a blessing aluminum shingles are under these conditions; lichen is no longer a problem.
